‘Permacrisis’ - the Collins Dictionary word of the year 2022
This ought to be of no surprise, given all that has happened in 2022, that 'permacrisis' - “a word describing an extended period of instability and insecurity” - has been chosen as the Collins Dictionary's ‘word of the year’. Just as the world was recovering from the ravages of COVID-19 and mountains of debt incurred, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has added to the turmoil in the equity, debt and commodity markets during 2022. As for cryptocurrencies, ‘permacrisis’ seems to be a particularly apt way to describe 2022 for the many crypto investors who have seen the market capitalisation of cryptos fall from $3trillion to under $1trillion in this last year.
