Crowdfunding and the role of blockchains
Crowdfunding is a method of raising funds from a large number of individuals, often via online platforms. It allows entrepreneurs to present their projects to a global audience and collect small amounts of money from many backers, which can cumulatively reach substantial amounts. The success of crowdfunding has been admirably demonstrated by Revolut which raised capital via crowdfunding, so valuing the company at £40million (it is now valued at $45billion). There are also various different types of crowdfunding; reward-based crowdfunding is where backers contribute to a project in exchange for rewards, typically in the form of products or experiences; equity-based crowdfunding is typically when investors receive shares in the company or project in exchange for their investment, allowing them to profit if the venture succeeds; and, finally, there is donation-based crowdfunding which is when usually individuals donate money to support causes or projects without expecting anything in re…
