An app, short for application, is a software program that runs on a device - for example, a smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer. Apps are typically designed to perform a specific function, such as providing a service or facilitating communication. Meanwhile a dApp, short for decentralised application, runs on a decentralised network. Unlike traditional apps, which typically have a centralised architecture with a server that manages data and processes requests, dApps are created to operate in a distributed network and are typically open-source, transparent and have no single point of control or failure. They are digital applications that use smart contracts housed on a decentralised server, typically run-on peer-to-peer (p2p) or blockchain networks.
