Globally, there are over 850 million people who have no formal identity whereby creating significant difficulties in the event of needing to relocate in times of a crisis - notwithstanding the severe challenges when distributing humanitarian aid. Blockchain and other decentralized technologies are being used in decentralized identity management when distributing humanitarian assistance, helping to make identity-related tasks faster, safer and more confidential. Historically, problems with traditional identity management systems have included communication difficulties, data gaps and vulnerability to hackers. Decentralized identity management solutions use blockchain technology to ensure relevant data is accessible, cannot be changed and is secure. This makes it possible to create digital identities so guaranteeing an individual’s uniqueness can be checked without reliance on a central authority.
