The World Economic Forum sees the digital economy at an inflection point for the global digital economy whereby marking a transition from the speculative enthusiasm of previous years to the structural foundations of a new financial market infrastructure. For over a decade, the concept of decentralisation was often presented as a moral imperative or a binary choice: a system was either decentralised and therefore virtuous, or centralised and therefore obsolete. However, as institutional grade deployment scales and regulatory frameworks such as the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) reach full maturity, a more sophisticated perspective has emerged among industry leaders and policymakers. Decentralisation is no longer viewed as an absolute goal but as a critical variable that must be tuned to achieve specific outcomes in resilience, efficiency and compliance.
